Summer Camp 2003 - Camp Cherokee - Thursday June 19, 2003

Tonight is Family Night and the last day of MB classes. Those scouts that did not qualify for Blue Swimmer on Sunday completed their swimming MB class yesterday and our ever-dwindling Polar Bear group was joined this morning by Cody who can now swim and take part in all swimming activities.

We had a couple of visitors today also; Brock came down for the day, Steve Miller and his family came down to visit our campsite in the morning as did Chris Honaker and his family in the afternoon. It's a demonstration of their interest in Scouting that they would take the time to make the drive to summer camp just for a short visit. Had things been different I'm sure that all would have preferred to have spent the entire week with us all along.

TJ completed his Lifesaving MB this afternoon, it is an Eagle required merit badge and a great asset to our troop.

Friends and family began showing up in late afternoon. It was a great opportunity for parents to see what their son's had accomplished during the week, and a final chance for scouts to collect some more $$$ for those "important" needs at the trading post!

One of our new scouts decided it was time to go home this evening with his parents. The decision took us all by surprise but we're glad for the time he did spend with us the first part.

At campfire tonight many of the campsites presented skits, the most popular was one put on by Troop 19 called the waiting room. I'm sure our boys will remember it for the next time they are called on.

Immediately after program there was an Order of the Arrow Tap Out. It was quite dramatic and even though most of our boys had seen OA callouts in the past, this left them with open mouths and bug-eyes! Our decision to talk about OA earlier in the week made the event all that more meaningful and magical! After the ceremony the Troop 9 OA members went off to the pre-ordeal ceremonies arriving back after the rest of the camp had turned in.

Tonight was also a "twilight zone" night for Doc. Brad, Carole, Tom and Dan remained up talking around the campfire as has been usual this week in camp. After a while Doc decided he was going to head for bed and went off to brush his teeth. While he was doing this Brad went on to bed leaving Carole and Dan talking by the fire. Suddenly out of the darkness came a figure which turned out to be one of the scoutmasters camped with Troop 19. He came in to chat for a while by the fire since all his campsite had gone to bed. It turned out that he and Carole had both worked for a couple of the big 8 accounting firms in Dallas during the same time period.

While this conversation was going on Doc came back to the campfire to finish some topic of conversation he had started with Brad before. When he came up next to the person sitting in Brads chair who he thought was Brad he was shocked to see a complete stranger and couldn't get out anything else but ".. umm. .., humhsmm. ". Vic, the other scoutmaster looked at Tom and asked if he had his chair, but Doc was so startled by this strange apparition that he simply turned and went on to bed. We didn't find out how startling it was for him until the next morning!
